I spent a little time down in the machine shop last week, and I am always amazed by what they do there. There were some Archer frames coming off one of the machines, so I took a couple pictures. Our frames start their life as a solid block of steel. So cool!

This fall our friends from the Hope Gallery along with the Baroness, To Die For and Pulse International put on a really cool event entitled "Quick and Painful". They had flash designed for the event from a slew of amazing contemporary artists and designers including, Alex Pardee, Amanda Visell, Brandt Peters, Camilla D’Errico, David Horvath, Devilrobots, Frank Kozik, Greg “Craola” Simkins, Huck Gee, Joe Ledbetter, Junko Mizuno, Kathie Olivas, Pete Fowler, Ron English, Sam Flores, Shawn “Shawnimals” Smith, TADO, Tara McPherson, and Tokidoki co-founder and Creative Director Simone Legno.They then hosted the show in Los Angeles, Chicago, New Haven, and Miami. At each stop along the way the gallery packed in a ton of talented tattoo artists, including, Dan Smith, Jennifer Trok, Heath Rave, Sean Adams, Patrick Cornolo, Jime Litwalk, Tim Harris, Phil Young, Julio Rodriguez, Scott White, Christian Perez, Eric Merrill, and Joe Capobianco. These artists did tattoos from the flash on a first come first serve basis at just $40 each!
Every venue was a sell out with lines around the block to get these collector tattoos. The limited edition flash sets from the shows are still available through the Hope Gallery.We were happy to be a sponsor of such cool events with such creative people. Sometimes it's good for the soul to sponsor events like this. Thanks to everyone who came out and to the other sponsors for making this event happen.

Spring Cleaning!

Ok so maybe we are a little late. That or else really early for next year. Either way, we were cleaning out our warehouse the other day and came across these two rare beauties!Both of these machines are still equipped with Pulse’s original Pivot Vise! We no longer manufacture machines with this type of vise so if you are a fan (which based on the phone calls I’ve received I know some of you are) this is your LAST chance to grab one.

The first machine we found is a Septa shader with 8 wrap coils. The Septa is built with a 3/8" core coil which gives it some extra power for that great solid color work.

The second machine we uncovered is this super unique Specialist liner equipped with a mini jack deck! This Specialist has 8 wrap coils and a hand cut cutback front spring. It runs quick and would be great for long lines with those smaller needle groupings.

"Build Your Own" Workshop III with Workhorse Irons...

The Paradise Tattoo Gathering of 2012 was the location of another successful "Build Your Own" tattoo machine building workshop. Just like our past "BYO" workshops, we combined forces with Workhorse Irons. Workhorse Irons was a main sponsor of this year's Paradise Tattoo Gathering and BJ Johnson came out in full force with the Workhorse staff. It was great to see everyone, and in some cases meet for the first time after YEARS of phone calls and emails. Hi Johnny!

For this year's "BYO" workshop, Brett and BJ designed a frame together that incorporated great features from both Pulse and Workhorse. The result was... Well, it was pretty awesome. And pretty exclusive. The machine's production was limited to the number of people in the workshops.

We held the workshop for two groups over two days, and everything went great! Here are some photos of the action...

We hoped everyone who attended has as much fun as we did.

Tattoo Masters No.13 - Now With More Brett Bryan

The very good people of Tattoo Masters magazine gave me a good turn and featured me in their new issue #13. They did a stellar job putting together the article and I couldn't be more excited. It really felt good being featured and interviewed after 12 years in this business of building machines and designing equipment for tattooing.
They featured a ton of machines that Pulse has put out through the years and crafted some really interesting questions for the interview. I am also happy to be featured in such a large European magazine. We sell a lot of equipment overseas but it's great to be exposed in a larger audience. I have also gotten some really great feedback from the feature already.
If you are unfamiliar with the magazine you should check it out. It is based out of the U.K. and they really go into depth with their interviews. They get people to share a lot of technical information and they have a global scope to their features. The magazine is oversized and printed on really great, heavy weight paper! We recently spotted Nathan Kostechko using a Pulse Solution tattoo machine at the Paradise Tattoo Gathering in Hancock, MA.
This shot pleases me to no end because when I first met Nathan, I used to call him "Air Supply"! At that time he was all Neuma tattoo machines, all the time! Nothing against those, of course! But, we were very glad that when he decided to come back to using Ben Franklin's good old fashioned electricity, he chose us. Thanks, Nathan!

It Really Was No Miracle, What Happened Was Just This...

If you didn't notice in our last post, not only are we back, but we're now in color! And we didn't even have to drop a house on a witch to get here. Witch (misspelling and/or pun intended) reminds me of a funny story...

Someone we know (names witheld to protect the innocent) has a hilarious story about the first time he watched The Wizard of Oz. This person came from a home and a time where it wasn't unusual to still only have a black and white television (imagine that!). When he went away to college, he watched The Wizard of Oz for the first time while simultaneously trying pot for the first time! When the movie turned color? Let's just say our friend's mind was blown!

So, now, just like our friends in The Wizard of Oz, we're making our transition from sepia to color. And just like Judy Garland had a stand-in to help her shift to color when filming, we'll have some new authors helping out on the blog.

We can hardly believe that fall is already upon us, especially since our New England summer climate included a tornado, an earthquake and a hurricane! In that order. This is the dreadful time of year for our industry when things start to slow down for everyone, as the weather gets colder and the skies get darker (I had no idea this was going to be so depressing!) and we're determined to make the best of any down time we get. Matt Hoffman BMX Hero / Pulse User?

Growing up I was huge into BMX and I have always drawn from those design aesthetics when I design equipment for Pulse. In the BMX/ Freestyle world there is no greater king of that sport that Mat Hoffman.
The other day I was reading Mat's blog and it seems he has been tattooing some of his friends of late and I couldn't help but notice that Mat seems to be rocking a Pulse Executive machine. It feels good when people you respect use your equipment, but Mat Hoffman. The Condor. That is very cool, and I can't stop smiling.

Pulse Flashback -Circa 2001

I was doing a little spring cleaning the other day and came across these gems from back in the day. I think this is 2001 or 2002. It feels like 50 years ago, I know it's cliche but time really does fly.I am not sure what I was thinking with the "soul patch", was I trying to drag the 90's into the 21st century? I don't think it avoided the razor much past this photo. My man Lyle Tuttle doesn't seem to be as happy to be hanging out with me as I am with him. That dude have 400 packs of nicorette gum in his room. He does own some really great machines, I hope he publishes his entire collection some day.
Damn what is Jessica, like 18? Did she even graduate high school yet? Good times for sure, we have come a long way.

I just finished watching them and as someone who uses photoshop on the regular, I can say they do a great job of focusing on the things they use on a daily basis in the tattoo shop. They gloss over the tools they don't use very often and delve deep into the tools they do use. See how they create one of a kind reference from photos and artwork. The quality is top notch and it is targeted right at the tattoo artist, from touching up your tattoo photos to making a great looking business card.

The "Build Your Own" Fall Session

Our Fall "Build Your Own" seminar was a huge success. We wanted to take a minute to thank everyone who attended and hope they enjoyed it as much as we did.
The best thing about a session like this, is it allows you to pick up other ideas from people who build machines every day. It also forces to you to examine your process as you guide someone through their developing process. It feels good to pay it forward. It's also nice to watch SOBA scold people when they have bad intel.
We would also like to thank SOBA for coming out and bringing his big bag of knowledge. At almost every turn he had a great trick for building or something very thought provoking. A pleasure to say the least.
To everyone who attended, thanks for coming out and to Jessica and Katie for the maple bacon cupcakes, well you know. We are in the early stages of a possible Spring "Build Your Own" session and a Fall SOBA machine building seminar at this years Paradise Tattoo Gathering.

Pulse Ten Year Special SIX

For our Sixth special we hooked up with our good friend SOBA to build a wonderful combo machine. The finished product is pretty kick-ass.
We sent 25 Fairfield frames to SOBA who created a hand rubbed finish with a special secret sauce of a patina. SOBA then set about creating Pulse Gear coil wraps that have become one of his amazing custom signatures. They are actual copper and all hand made over hand wound SOBA copper coils.
The Fairfield is our top shelf brass machine that runs as smooth as butter, and the machine run was split with half liners / half shaders. It also feature our new p-nut vise that works like a charm.
The hardware was all custom made as well as the lasered and numbered A-bars and Soba signed each machine. Alex from Pulse took extra time with each machine tuning it to run to perfection. The machine run is limited to only 25 pieces of which SOBA took one and we took one to add to the trophy case, so only 23 will hit the streets.
We packed the whole shooting match up in this custom milk crate with a laser project tag and a signed "record" of the whole project. We want to say thank you to SOBA for taking the time out of his busy schedule to do something special for us. We don't get nearly enough opportunities here at Pulse to create custom projects and one offs. We are very proud of our machines and equipment and this 10 year anniversary is something special. We also wanted to make sure the price was special...$350.00. We only turn 10 once!!

Build Your Own Workshop 2

We had so much fun at last years "Build Your Own" workshop that was held at the Paradise tattoo show that we decided to offer it again October 16th, 2010. This year we will be holding it at the Pulse homebase here in Connecticut and SOBA will be flying in for the workshop. We will be covering a wide range of machine topics over the course of the day.
The hours will run from 10am to 5pm and we plan to cover a lot of ground. The biggest part of day will be building machines and you can choose from any of our Pulse Machines or any the Workhorse Irons SOBA machines. We will take you step by step through our process when we build and let you in on all the things we think about at each stage of the build. This will be followed by a tuning session so you can get your machines to run where you would like them to.
There will also be a great session where SOBA and Brett from Pulse will go through many other machine designs and point out there strengths and weaknesses and explain how they were made and how the material and geometry effect each machine. They will have tons of example to run and examine.
Also for the first time ever we will be offering a facility tour of Pulse with demos of coil winding, soldering and prototyping. The whole Pulse family will be there to host these demos and mini seminars. Co-founder Tim Brewer will be in the house along with master builder Alex Benoit and super solderer Joe Sherry. All sessions will have question and answer forums.
Along with all the info we are going to stuff into your head we will be revealing a special anniversary edition Pulse machine collaboration with SOBA that very day. We are also going to pack up a fantastic bag full of goodies for you to take home with your new machines. Also lunch is on us and we will have complimentary beverages through out the day.
Along with all the grizzy men talking about tattoo machines, we will sweeten the day with appearances from Katie and Jessica to tell funny stories about crazy customers and maybe bring some of their soon to be famous chocolate bacon cupcakes.

Top Secret: Flatiron

I opened my mail yesterday to find these all new top secret prototype grips from the good folks at Morphix. It seems they have been tinkering with some new designs.The new grip code name : Flatiron seems to have many of the great properties of the original Humbolt grip. It does have a compressed quality to it and at first glance I was concerned if it was going to be comfortable. Once I laced it up I could tell it was going to be good fit.
One of the things they have achieved with the compact geometry is the feel of a smaller grip. It makes sense that you couldn't just shrink the Humbolt. Your thumb and fingers don't shrink so you want the grooves to fit your digits comfortably (which they do). So the new configuration feels more precise, maybe better to control a liner with, or a small mag. These are just prototypes so they seem to be the same material as the original Morphix grips, but I do have an inside word they are improving upon an already great base material.
I like them, I have a small to medium hand and I felt they would fit me better than the regular Humbolts, they may even take a bit more stress off the hand and they definitely offer some more control. I do think they may take a bit more time to adjust to rolling in the hand due to their oval shape, but they are form fitting. I am also glad to carry a product from a company that is moving in the forward direction, refining their products and taking some chances on new ideas. 10 Years of Pulse

Well Happy Birthday to us. The ideas for this company were born at a tattoo studio in the mid 90's and we pursued it bit by bit. In 2000 we made it official and started selling the Specialist. Wow -ten years later, and we have achieved many of the goals we set for ourselves. I love the idea that an artists will work tomorrow with some of our equipment that they have been using for 10 years. That feels really good to me.
Katie's mom baked us an awesome cake to kick off our Birthday right. We are going to follow it up with some gifts. For the next 10 months we are going to offer a Pulse special each month to celebrate and say thanks for your support. We are planning a couple of great deals on popular products, and some special edition things. Some things will last for a couple weeks some things will only last a day or two, but it will be fun for the rest of the year.

Ahh.. remember your first tattoo. I do, I still have it after about twenty years. A few weeks back the son of the artist who did it, Pete Jr. hit me up with an e-mail and told me his dad was cutting his hours back and was cleaning up the shop a bit, going through some old flash and drawings. He asked me what the first tattoo I had gotten from his dad, looked like. I didn't really think much about it until he sent me an email and when I opened it there was my tattoo! His dad had kept every stencil he had created. I couldn't believe it, this drawing is 20 years old. It made my week!

Sorry I missed Fine Art Friday last week, but I am back on track. This weeks fare showcases the work of one Bawidamann, Andrew Bawidamann. I have been a fan of his work for years. The cool thing about his work is it looks a bit like it was done on the computer. It has those clean lines and blocks of great color that almost look like they were created in Adobe Illustrator. But they are all painted by hand. The strength of his art lies in it's simplicity also. If he only needs two lines he only uses two lines. Good lesson.

Bawidamann's unique style of Pin-ups are usually clad in WWII and military style gear, so I dug this piece for it's Southern California vibe. Check out his stuff, his store is always stocked to the top with T-shirts and print. The_Art_of_Bawidamann

Yet another great sketch from Greg "Craola" Simkins. This was from his show entitled, "Don't Sleep". This idea of having his characters in an amusement style ride is a reoccurring theme for Greg. Let's hope that one day Greg gets popular enough that someone makes a CRAOLA LAND. We will be able to ride on these wonderful inventions. Here at Pulse we have been fans of the "Sons of Anarchy" show since it started. We got a phone call last week letting us know that next week on the season finally our machines and equipment will be featured in one of the scenes. Henry Rollin's character A.J. Weston is going to get tattooed with a Pulse machine in a tattoo shop scene. We have worked with this prop company before and our stuff has been featured on "Nip/Tuck" and "Prison Break". It's pretty cool to see your stuff on T.V., so tune in and check it out.

This weeks selection comes from an artist by the name of Raphael, I mistakenly thought our friend Krystof created it, but he is just the main scientist character. He created this version of Pulse in the lab via water color markers. I always like the piece due to it's comic book layout. It's a bit askew, almost as if someone is looking in on the operation, but maybe staying hidden out of view. Hmmm. Upon placing the detail of the piece into the blog I noticed the top of the scientist's paperwork is the title John 3:16 which quotes the bible -"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life". Is the message that the Pulse scientists are trying to create another messiah in giant test tube. Are their machines savior like? By using their equipment will your tattoo's live on forever? Deep waters. I am not sure where Raphael is working now, but Krystof recently relocated to sunny Las Vegas Nevada. He now plies his work at Club Tattoo in the Planet Hollywood Hotel. Another cool piece comes from another old school pal of ours the illustrious Gunnar. This is an older piece of his. It was definitely a forerunner to his current style, and that is why I dig it. I also felt the piece had a lot of emotion. Why the tears sweet geisha? Happiness or sorrow? I always felt she looked a little ambiguous. Like perhaps she has just gotten word that her master has been slain on the battle field. She must shed tears because it is expected of her, yet she is joyful inside that she may be gaining her freedom? Did I look into it too far, perhaps... Bloodwork Has Arrived!

It has arrived, and it is fantastic. I have been lucky enough to have a pre-release copy of the book sent to me by adrian lee, the mastermind behind the project. I have looked though this book everyday for last week. There is a lot to absorb and is easily the most deluxe book ever produced of tattoos.

Bloodwork gives a whole new meaning to oversize coffee table book, weighing in at 12 pounds and 16" tall by 9.5" wide the book is huge. It comes nestled in the most unique slipcase I have ever seen. It's a two piece slipcase with a die cut that shows the lenticular cover detail. The lenticular picture on the cover shows motion. It is set off nicely by a circular foil stamp. It is very impressive.The book is 350 pages, and each feature folds out to an amazing 30" print. Each sleeve was photographed by Max Dolberg, from every conceivable angle. The layouts are really fantastic. Look how big this book is, damn.

The Kolectiv has been extended to include some of the best artists working today. Featuring sleeves from Guy Aitchinson, Aaron Cain, adrain lee, GRIME, Filip Leu, Juan Puente, Chris Trevino and tons more. The lineup is a real who's who.

The quality of this book is unparalleled and really unprecedented . I can't say enough good things about all the books that have been launched from this core collection of California tattoo artists. From "Suits Made to Fit" to "Full Coverage" and now "Bloodwork: Sleeves" these are amazing books that make you feel good to be a part of this art form. This weeks work is from a power duo. Direct from Philly wonder twin powers activated on this one. Dave Fox did this painting with Josh Hoffman. They created a set of prints and I was lucky enough to snag this piece. I do believe they were going to start a set of flash and it morphed into a series of paintings. Both these dudes have great styles and they work really well together. Love the pirate imagery - this is a power house of a piece.

Also this week is a great painting from artist Jamie Cross. Jamie and I worked together for years at a couple different studios. I have always enjoyed watching Jamie grow through the years with both his tattooing and painting skills. Jamie has always had a tremendous enthusiasm for tattooing that still survives to this day. Machine Heads - Prepare to Lose Your Minds - I Did

Once you have been in this business for a minute you can sometimes feel like you have "seen it all" and then someone like Larry Ross comes along and blows you away. I met Larry last year at a convention and he wanted to show me some of his custom machines. He opened his machine case up and all the sudden it was like someone opened a treasure chest. A crowd gathers instantly around him and his machines. Larry has thought of every crazy idea you have ever had about building a machine then some. He has 4 coil machines, wood machines, over the top rigs, tube through the front coil machines! Yes you read that right.

This year we ran into him and once again he did not disappoint. He had some crazy machines. The night before we ran into Larry, I was talking to Soba about machine design and he sketched an idea he had out on a napkin. The machine would have no rear spring, just a pivot point and the spring would be provided on the front coil. He wanted to use a coil spring that could be swapped out for different compressions.

The very next day as we talked with Larry, he pulled it out of his case. He had the same idea, oh and he also turned the coil sideways and created a crazy side bar loop front binder stay. He is awesome. Everything he makes is a one off, hand made by him in his workshop in Vermont. He doesn't create production machines so to speak. But he does sell some of these machines. Everything Larry builds is beautiful, he mixes materials, he mixes different finishes, he has created whole new ideas about machines. It is so exciting to see his work, you just get overwhelmed. (at least I do)

Yes this machine has 4 coils, it runs, and he wired them as two pairs not a sequence. I always wondered...

I loved this idea of a shape on the end of a spring. Look close at the amount of handwork involved. You can still see the marker lines on his hand cut spring and the jack he cut down to make his contact point out of, I also think that is a lamp switch that he is using to hold it all together. It is all about the details with these machine, Larry is a true artist!No this is not an illusion. I have had some crazy ideas in the past, in fact I have a sketchbook full of them, but not in my wildest drawings did I ever have this idea. Ever. Look close. Yes he made a machine where the tube goes right up through the coils. The a-bar is notched out like a horseshoe with a nipple in the center.

I know what your thinking....cause I was thinking it too.....

It can't possibly run...can it? IT DOES, it runs alright. I don't think you are going to shade a 13 mag for two hours with it, but you could line with it. A-mazing.

He really has some gems, the craftsmanship is only eclipsed by the creativity. This machine was coated with a hard grey coating I had never seen. Larry said it was parkerizing, some process the military uses. Crazy.

Yeah, wrap the old melon around this rig.

Great concept. Fully functional. Another pivot rig with compression spring front. Unreal. Tim Brewer was geeked, Soba was geeked. Larry will share any information he has. He answers every question you have and provide answers about the details, super gracious.

As for me, well you can see my face. I get over excited, a bit. And unfortunately for Larry I have a thousand questions.

Really the most impressive thing is that all the machines run, crazy ideas, mixed metals, weird parts, antique pieces, they all run. Larry is true craftsman and a total inspiration to me and I hope to everyone who meets him. He really cares about tattoo machines and what he builds. That is very rare in this business and he should be applauded. You won't meet a nicer a guy, with such a high level of commitment to see his ideas through to a finished product. Fine Art Friday

Direct from the King of Seattle comes this beautiful demon painting. Our long time friend Aaron Bell from Slave to the Needle painted is especially for us. What a great gift.

He even included the Pulse logo. Along with being a tattoo staple in Pacific Northwest Aaron has created a ton of great flash that we sold the wheels off for years. I would bet you could stop in to almost any street shop in America and find Aaron's designs on the wall. He has a great eye for creating what the customer wants.I also seem to remember that I spend a bunch time riding Aaron about parting with the above sailor girl painting. It was a Skin & Ink magazine cover as well as a best selling print. I love that painting (I only own a print of it) and hope he will tire of it on his wall one day and part with it. The New Specialist, I Think We Got It

Over the last year we have been revamping our entire line of tattoo machine frames to incorporate out new vise. It works so well that we wanted all our frames to get the treatment. When it came time to add the new vice to the Specialist a bunch of questions came flooding into my mind about some of our design choices. The Specialist was our first frame and I felt it could use a little updating. The first thing on my wish list was to do away with the back tab and the channel that we created to slip the solder lug into. It made it very easy to put the back binder onto the machine and wire it, but it also made us cut binders down just for this frame for years. It also feels a bit lopsided, I also saw an opportunity to create a window in the rear stay like the Corsair. Which I love. I also felt the side plate of the machine could go on a diet and become bit more streamlined. We have taken it in, in a bunch of places.

The new rear tab is way more aesthetically pleasing, I love the new radius and the fact we can now use a regular binder for the rear, no more shorties! All in all I am really happy with the re-design. The machine also has the new vise, is a bit lighter, and still runs those 3's and 5's like the devil. Fine Art Flowers

This set of paintings was created by tattooist / painter Jay Langer. Jay had done a beautiful series of paintings that interspersed bones with flowers. It was a nice mix of morbid beauty, I loved the concept and the pieces were great to mount together with the ribs up top and the hip in the lower position.

Jay is a very talented guy, along with holding down full time duties at his studio he paints, plays in a band, builds bikes, designs for a T Shirt Co., makes flash...yeah Jay is one of those guys. Super energy, super productivity -great combo. Check him out -http://www.myspace.com/jaylanger.

Another great painting that hangs at Pulse with a beautiful traditional flower comes from Grez DNA. If you are familiar with Grez then you know how clean and strong his tattoo work is. His paintings stand up to that same visual test. He has a great eye for structure and a great grasp of those classic images that define western traditional tattooing.

Is that not the perfect tattoo rose? I also remember eyeing this pieces for half a day as I cruised through a convention. I came back to buy it right before I left and was really happy. As I was thanking Grez and walking away from the table CIV had walked up and was asking Grez about this painting, it seems he also wanted to purchase it. This week brings a great pen and ink from the one and only Greg "Craola" Simkins, and yes we do have a bunch of Craola art. One - because we love it and Two- he is most talented guy working today. I love how he blends ideas and his style is instantly recognizable. That is not an easy thing to achieve, to create and right upon sight everyone knows who did it. I think that is the holy grail for an artist. He's is getting there and trust me he is going to keep pushing himself forward into that rare league of artists working today. This cool little piece was a gift and I can't remember the artist name I think it was Eric and it's signed CHUNG so I assume it's a great piece from Eric Chung the painter of people inside animals. Also if I was any animal I would be an octopus or a squid, so I made a personal connection with this piece. -Oh, and the painting wasn't a gift from the artist, that would suck if he had given me the painting and I forgot his name. -BONUS- This weeks bonus piece was also a gift from our friend and artist Kore Flatmo. "Build Your Own" Was a Great Time!

The Pulse "Build Your Own" Workshop at this years Paradise Tattoo Gathering was a blast. We set up the workshop for a dozen folks to come in and build any of our machines from scratch. We were lucky to have so much interest and actually sold out the event weeks in advance (thanks!).

We broke things down into two groups of six and Soba and I ran an open forum where we discussed a dozen different styles of machines. We looked at everything from the materials used to make the frame to the process and the geometry. I was even tired of hearing myself talk after a couple of hours.

The other team of Alex, Joe and Tim ran a hands on step by step assembling of a coil setup along with tutorials on capacitors, resistance, electricity and materials.

Then everyone assembled their machines and we switched groups. Happily all machines started right up and that sounded great. Everyone who attended had great questions. This is always a learning experience for me also. When people make you stop and think about things that can be taken for granted, it always make me think about our process.

I think it's always really helpful and healthful to examine how you do things, there is always something new to discover. The thing that blew me away the most about the workshop came at the end. As I was thanking everyone for coming I started to ask people where they were from. The artists had come from all over the country, Arkansas, Tennessee, San Francisco, New York, Michigan, Connecticut and Massachusetts. That felt really good, I didn't expect people to travel from all over and that was a nice surprise. As always SOBA from Workhorse straightened me out on a few things, and we swapped some cool ideas, it was great have Tim in the session, and I think it was good for Alex and Joe to get to be able to share their knowledge. All in all it was a really fantastic time. I think we were scheduled from 12 to 3pm but we ran until almost 5pm, and we could have gone longer! We are now kicking around the idea of offering an in house workshop a couple times a year where you would be able to come to Pulse take a tour and then we would sit down and build a rig. Next year we are going to try to put that together so keep it in mind. Thanks to everyone who came down.

This Friday brings a great piece from artist Eric Merrill. This piece was created with pastels which are some of the best pieces I own. The thing about pastels is they have to primarily be worked and blended with your fingers. So the artist really has to get their hands dirty (literally) I also feel doing pastels takes a toll on the artist, the substance is very drying to skin so the artist fingers get cracked and dry, couple that with tattooing in latex gloves all day and you can imagine how tough it is to spend hours each day working pastels. So that means a lot when you know what goes into each piece.

The best part of this pastel is that it was a gift. I had attended a gallery opening at Hope Gallery and was going piece to piece checking out the info on each piece in the price sheet. When I got to this piece on the wall it was listed NFS (not for sale) private collection -Brett Bryan. What a great way to get a gift, it is one of the most special pieces I own and admit it that is a sexy pose. It's also quite big 24" x 36", no joke. ...and speaking of Hope Gallery another great story is how I acquired this piece from Joe Capo. This Hope -Lost -Hope Mother painting was a give away painting at an opening. They sold a bunch of raffle tickets with the money going to a cancer charity. 10 Reasons the Paradise Tattoo Gathering is Great

The Paradise Tattoo Gathering this year was fantastic. It is a unique show due to the fact it's only 1/3 show combined with 1/3 learning annex with 1/3 relaxing weekend. I don't believe there to be another show like this. Plus we had a good time making our sign for the booth. But here in no particular order are 10 reasons the Gathering is great...

#10 -The location is the Berkshire mountains in New England in Fall, the surroundings are unreal. The air is clean the location tucked away into a mountain and nature is in full effect. You can clear your head, not easy to do at most shows.

It's also like a miniature village , so you have to travel from building to building to see and do everything. One building has the convention floor, one building has the art gallery, one building has the forums, you get the idea. #9 -The people. Everyone comes to learn and share ideas. I also feel the show is mostly artists. I mean everyone, really high level talented artists were taking other people's seminars. That is very telling right there - when you know someones work is amazing and they have an international reputation but they still come out to learn. Well that right there is a lesson, you are never to good to learn and grow. It is a very positive energy -again unique to this show.

#8- There is a very dangerous, very unpredictable alpine slide. So if you feel the weekend is too laid back, strap in and loose some skin.

#7- One word "SOBA". He knows a ton about machine building, and metal smithing, and jewelry making, and raising koi, and bonzi trees, and jet boats, and lasers, beer making...is there an AA for people addicted to hobbies. I'm just saying, he knows a lot of stuff...

#6- Because you are in the woods you can totally wear plaid lumberjack shirts the whole time. It's cool, people expect it. Plus weird stuff happens like I found out that Obie Hughes and I were born in the same hospital.

#7- The accommodations are great. The suites are huge with fireplaces and full kitchens. Plus when you wake up to realize someone decided to rebuild someones tattoo machine where you were about to eat breakfast- well you can just leave after the weekend. Also there are plenty of other places to eat. #6- Everyone gets along. At the Pulse booth we were selling our machines right along side machines from SOBA, and Joe Capo. When you get like minded people together it is a good thing, you feel things moving forward and when you get home you don't feel like your stuck in the mud . Hearing fresh things and meeting new people with unique ideas is a great motivator.

#5- Bob Tyrrell tattooed this beautiful portrait of Dolly Parton on this nice girls thigh. Dolly and I share the same Birthday so I feel a connection. Great tattoo work was wall to wall. #4-The food is good, they have a turkey wrap made with real turkey. Like they cooked a turkey and then slice off the meat to make the wrap. Like the day after thanksgiving. Oh yeah it's also nice to share a meal with old friends. Also- not for nothing but Joe Capo might have an interesting opinion to share at the table. But damn that turkey wrap was good.

#3- I love the forums. I love the idea of a panel of artists talking about a topic. I like a discussion and I like a disagreement, I like the audience to participate, cause you guessed it, I like to think. An intelligent discussion always gets you to think. The topics were good this year ranging from the state of tattooing to how to work healthier, how to bring up an apprentice. I was lucky enough to moderate a forum on business of tattooing outside of tattooing that explored all the opportunities that exist -from T-shirt lines, to commercials, to gallery shows, to tattoo conventions, to television. My panel included Shawn Barber, Russ Abbott, Durb Morrison, and Guy Aitchison. They were all great and had some really good stories. Thanks to them for making the panel great.

#2- The Toy Baroness from Kidrobot spent some time in the Pulse booth, and quite frankly that rules. She was with the Carlos half of the Beast Bros. -not too shabby. #1- Kim Saigh was there tattooing. I know your are wondering, yes she looks as good in real life as she does on T.V. All in all a real good time, a good motivator, good connections, good people, good venue. I believe the show is going to become an every other year event so keep it in mind for 2011.

Interspersed with our fine collection of paintings is some really great original sketches. My favorite is from comic artist J. Scott Campbell. He had created this Princess from G-Force drawing for a "Battle Of The Planets" trading card set. Campbell's art is traditionally colored on the computer (sidebar: isn't it funny to hear the word traditional with the word computer) so with him this is as close as you get to his original art. Most comic artists are really sketch artist because they will turn over their pencils to be outlined and colored by someone else.For my money Campbell draws just about the best girls in comics, hands down. I only wished he did a monthly title like he did with Gen13 or Danger Girl. Never lose sight of the fact comics are great place to look to be inspired. Another great sketch we have is from artist Andrew Bawidamann. Andrew does those really graphic Pin-Ups you see on shirts and poster. He actually does some tattoo shows with his art. Our good friend Jime Litwalk was just in town for the Paradise Tattoo Gathering (coverage coming soon) and he hung out with us here at Pulse for a couple days. Our own Katie got herself all kind of tattooed up by Jime. The piece was based on Tim Burton Poem called "Voodoo Girl", and I think they cooked up a great interpretation.

Fine Art Returns

We were away last Friday at the Paradise Tattoo Gathering and missed the update, but we are back. Josh Hoffman did this awesome "Rock of Ages" painting for us. He substituted the traditional stone cross for our gear logo. Josh's work has a special touch to it, he is a great composer and constructor of both paintings and tattoos. Clean lines and great layouts!

Over the years I had built three or four machines for Josh, but they never seemed to hit hard enough for him. I did just about everything I could think of to make a hard hitting machine, in fact the last rig I did hurt my thumb as I tested it without a needle set up. Trust me it hit, but I still don't think it was hard enough. I guess Josh Hoffman is like L.L. Cool J "Hard as hell".

The piece also made it's way to a Pulse T. We are very happy with it.

We are also the proud owners of Josh Hoffman's Abrasions skate deck. Josh painted the piece on paper then cut it out and shellacked it to the board. That is some serious scissor control. JoshHoffman

Yet another great painting from Shawn Barber. I have been a fan since Shawn begin using the art of tattooing as his subject matter. The energy and point of view that he captures is truly unique. No one has ever put this particular spin on the process. He also has a great way with portraits. This piece comes from an unknown artist and was a gift from my good friend Thug Josh. He was recently in Vietnam and bought this piece for me outside of a temple. It is silk screened on a burbur type of fabric. I think they silk screened right there while he waited. No big machine or special printer. BY HAND! Each screen.

Check out the details, just incredible. Craftsmanship comes in all mediums, I think here in the U.S. we take silkscreening for granted. It is how they make concert T-shirts and posters, but it can be elevated to a great artform. I am going to keep my eye out to add some more quality silk screen pieces to our collection here at Pulse.

Our new Pulse Machine T shirts are in and they came out sweet. The shirts are black with black and grey art and the sizes range from Small to 2XX. They drop next weekend at the Paradise Tattoo Gathering and should be up on the site right after. We will be sure to clue you in. I also did the photo setup in sepia the way I usually do and now that I see the shirt in sepia we might just mix up a batch in sepia on brown shirts perhaps. Perhaps.

Back again, the great Jime Litwalk. Jime created this painting for us when we had the idea of using a lunchbox for a machine package. We thought it would be great to have our own Pulse hot rod rat fink style guy. Jime just did the perfect thing, it was better than we imagined it could be.

Another great thing about Jime's paintings are many of them are done in 1 shot automotive enamel. It really has a great quality in real life. For a piece like this it also adds a bit more of an authentic feel. We also lost the source for these lunchboxes and replaced them with a simple tin. Oh another great skateboard from our original "Abrasions" collection. This deck is from the tremendous mind of Rodney Raines. I was fascinated by this deck because of the way it told the story. In Re Development

As we go through the process of reworking each of our frames to integrate our new vise, we really examined some of the design details of each machine. Since the first frame we designed was the Specialist, we felt it could use a bit of refreshing. We have decided to loose the tab in the back with the sneaky cut out for the rear solder lug. It made it easy to plumb the machine but didn't really make sense. We are now pursuing the idea of a new tab and then cutting in a window in the rear deck stay ala the Corsair. We have also thinned down the side post a bit and played with the arches. Here is first look, we hope to have another proto next week.

This weeks featured painting from our collection here at Pulse, is from none other than the queen of pin-up art -Olivia! I have owned this piece for years and not a day goes by that it doesn't get looked at. I love how soft the features of her face are. I have been of fan of Olivia's since "Let them eat cheesecake" first came out, so it is a genuine treat to be able to own an original. It does not disappoint!

Also the piece looks at first glance to be watercolor, but I believe most of her stuff like this is done in gouache. It also adds to the depth of the piece. http://www.eolivia.com/

Also this week from kick ass artist Tom Strom. An amazing rendition of the "The Virgin of Guadalupe" but with a Pulse twist. You want to know a secret about this painting? It wasn't painted at all - it's all alcohol markers. Damn how fast do you have to work when doing a piece like this in marker. Have you ever tried to use them? Once you run over the same spot again it instantly gets darker, they are tough to control, but not for Tom. Big Projects

The idea for doing a large Mag, tip & tube combo has been kicking with us for a bit. We have finally got around to prototyping a setup. This has been milled out of one piece of stainless stock. I would love to take the credit, but it's our machinist Mac who has worked out nearly all the bugs and created this one piece beauty! Nice work. We are almost there we need some retooling on the actually shovel numbers, but should be into a Beta version by the end of Sept, with a roll out by end of 09 early 10.
The grip will come in two sizes along with two maybe three tip sizes. Our plan right now is 25 and 35 mag. We will also be stocking the needles as well. We are still up in the air about 45 mag, that's a lot of needles. As soon as we see a Beta version we will give a try in the skin and post our results.

Detroit Art Friday

This week brings the real deal from Detroit, Bob Tyrrell. If Bob isn't on the top of your list of people to get tattooed from -check your list. The nicest guy in tattooing has been on the top of my Best black and grey artists for years. I was blown away when Bob drew this skull up especially for us.
His work is so detailed and soft. It's that same technique that Bob uses to create his feathery soft portrait work, building up light layers to create the great tones. Bob did this skull with just 1 pencil. ONE. Very impressive.

The Poison Notebook

The sketchbook that never was. I had seen people on the Internet who created these great looking moleskin notebooks on their lasers and thought, "Hey that would be great for our new catalog". I had ordered up a bunch of notebooks and lasered a few. I than saw a posting that said moleskin notebooks were made of PVC and by burning the covers in the laser I was producing the highly poisonous gas hydrochloric acid. Since I wanted to keep living, alas we never had cool Pulse sketchbooks. See not all good ideas are good. Now that's one to grow on.

Welcome, the spotlight this week is a piece from artist Eric Merrill. I have known Eric for many years. We started in this business together and Eric was very instrumental in Pulse's early success. He would always take out a dozen machines for us and sell when he was traveling. He hooked us up with many of the great customers and friends we have today. He also has done a fair job of hooking us up with some great pieces of art. Power thru Technology is an awesome painting. I love the golden age comic book feel.

The beam was the best detail, that and the coil set inside the robot. Back in the day I always wanted this to be a T-shirt but it would have been so many screens it would have been like having a bullet proof plate on you shirt, but printing techniques have come so far that we could print this up and you wouldn't ever feel it. This piece is also connected to my past. It is a blue stone carving from tattooist Peter Coinin Sr. When he is not tattooing he carves all this amazing stone Celtic knot work by hand! People just don't do work like this anymore. The great thing about this carving is that Peter was the first person to tattoo me. He did my first three tattoos, back in the days when I would scrape together a couple hundred dollars and race to see him. Now 20 years later he stops in and hangs out at Pulse, he started me off and now created this great hand carved sign for me. The Demi Is In...Pieces.

We finally have all the parts in for the new DEMI power unit. We like to do the final assembly in house so we can control both the finish quality and testing standards. The units look great and they should be available next week. Keep checking the website, as soon as we fill the waiting list we will post it up.

This unit has all the great features of our digital Mark2 unit but is less than half the size. It is the perfect thing for travel.

Super Special Workshop Guest -SOBA

Sorry I missed Friday but Tuesday works just as well. Another fantastic painting from L.A. artist Greg "Craola" Simkins. This piece is entitled "Ramona" and is super rich and refined. The details are great, the little skulls on the bow, the fur on her body, the carved pumpkin.I can't say it enough, but Greg is the most creative guy working today. This painting hangs in my office and I love it, but I don't know who painted it. I bought it from a gallery that sells originals that were used for book covers. So this was the cover of a book at one time. I'm sure it had a title like "Murder on Ward One", or "Emergency Room Emergency" or "Nurse Dangerous" or "Murderer, M.D.". By the way when my mind wanders I do just stare at this painting making up titles.

From his innovative tattoo work to his stunning art, Robert Hernandez is one of the leaders in the industry today. I feel Robert takes his cues from many classic painters and then translates that study into his tattoo work. This piece is a pastel from Robert and it seems to morph over time . New Martin LaCasse Book Coming!

We just got our hands on some secret proof sheets from publisher Presto Art. They put out Martin's best selling "Take what you can...give nothing back". They are getting ready to go to press with Martin's new book "Three Sixty Five".

Martin created tattoo sketches everyday for a year. Each month he focused on a different subject from flowers to koi to skulls. The rumor is that the book is actually going to be 4 books in a slip case. Over 375 pages, it's going to be amazing and has a tentative street date mid-September. We have also cut a deal to be one of the retailers for the special edition. Stay tuned because it's going to be serious.

The real amazing thing is the amount of craftsmanship that Jason puts into the canvas. If you look close you can see he has cut out shapes and then covers them with canvas.
